The 2nd Uganda Conference on Cancer and Palliative Care

The Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) together with the Palliative Care Association of Uganda (PCAU) will host the 2nd Uganda Conference on Cancer and Palliative Care in September 2019 in Kampala. The theme for the conference is “Towards Universal Coverage”. This international conference will take place at the Kampala Serena Hotel, on 5th – 6th September 2019. The conference will showcase plenary presentations, educational and special sessions on current research and work on cancer and palliative care. UCI is Uganda’s premier cancer treatment center that has contributed tremendously to research and care of cancer patients since its inception in 1967. UCI is host to a regional center of excellence in oncology – The East Africa Oncology Institute. PCAU is a non-governmental organization that supports and promotes the development of palliative care services in Uganda. Since 2003, PCAU has held 7 biennial conferences that brought together local and international stakeholders in palliative care. In 2017 PCAU partnered with UCI to host their 7th biennial conference as part of a joint conference in which UCI celebrated its Golden jubilee. The 2nd Uganda Conference on Cancer and Palliative Care, will offer an expanded scope, enriched experience and unique opportunities to discuss research findings as well as educational sessions on cancer and palliative care by national and international experts. The conference will provide an opportunity to showcase scientific and program work carried out by different individuals and institutions. Conference objectives The conference will have the following objectives: (a) To showcase cancer and palliative care research conducted in East Africa and globally; (b) To share strategies for standardization of cancer care across sub-Saharan Africa; (c) To document resources available for cancer and palliative care research, and training in East and globally; (d) To promote collaborative work on cancer and palliative care research and training among participating national, regional and international individuals and institutions. The conference will offer information on the entire continuum of cancer care as well as palliative care including for other conditions through both plenary presentations and special sessions. The conference proceedings will provide a critical cornerstone for fast tracking translation of research findings into practice and facilitate standardization of cancer care in the region. Expected to attend this conference are policy makers, eminent researchers, healthcare providers, policy makers, media practitioners, patients and members of the general public. Conference tracks: • Track 1: Capacity Building. • Track 2: Service Provision • Track 3: Health Promotion and Prevention • Track 4: Policy and Advocacy • Track 5: Special Groups • Track 6: Research and Innovations • Track 7: Pediatrics Mode of conference delivery: (a) Through plenary sessions delivered by internationally renowned speakers across the seven track areas. (b) Oral and poster presentations based on successfully peer-reviewed abstracts. (c) Abstract based workshops and special workshops identified by the conference scientific committee. Important dates Registration: Opens April 1st, 2019 1. Call for abstracts: Open: 1st April 2019 and closes on: 1st June 2019 2. Notification for acceptance of abstracts: 15th July 2019 3. Conference happens: 5th – 6th September 2019 4. Gala dinner 5th September 2019.
