Priorities for palliative and end of life care policy: choice, quality and integration

This seminar will assess policy priorities for palliative and end of life care. Delegates will consider the impact of NICE’s recently launched consultation on draft guidance for Care of the Dying Adult, which seeks to improve communication with patients and families. The increasing role of choice for patients and families following on from the Department of Health's independent review on choice in end of life care and the Care Quality Commission's renewed focus on regulating end of life care will also be discussed. In addition there will also be focus on progress made in integrating health and social care and the impact of the New Models of Care vanguard sites on end of life care, calls for round-the-clock access to specialist palliative care in acute and emergency settings, as well as recommendations for free social care at end of life highlighted in the Health Select Committee's report on end of life care. At this early stage we are delighted to announce that Baroness Neuberger, Chair, Independent Review of the Liverpool Care Pathway; Claire Henry, Chief Executive, National Council for Palliative Care and Dying Matters; Professor Sir Mike Richards, Chief Inspector of Hospitals, CQC; Mary Agnew, Assistant Director of Standards and Ethics, General Medical Council; Amanda Cheesley, Professional Lead, Long Term Conditions and End of Life Care, Royal College of Nursing; Dr Jane Collins, Chief Executive, Marie Curie; Grainne Siggins, Director of Adult Social Care, Newham Council and Policy Lead, ADASS and Professor Keri Thomas, Founder and National Clinical Lead, Gold Standards Framework Centre and Honorary Professor End of Life Care, University of Birmingham have kindly agreed to speak at this seminar. Professor the Baroness Finlay of Llandaff, Vice Chair, All-Party Parliamentary Group on Hospice and Palliative Care and Chair, National Council for Palliative Care has kindly agreed to chair a session at this seminar.
