No one with a life-limiting condition should live and die with unnecessary pain and distress due to lack of access to quality care.

The WHPCA is striving for a world where there is universal access to hospice and palliative care. We are focussed on four strategic objectives:

1. To be a strong, sustainable and efficient global membership organisation exclusively focused on hospice and palliative care

2. To be an effective and powerful global voice and advocate for hospice and palliative care

3. To promote integration of palliative care into country health systems drawing on and supporting local technical expertise

4. To promote and assist national associations to integrate palliative care into national undergraduate and postgraduate health science curricula and health & social care workers training programmes

Our programme of work includes:

1.       Global advocacy

We want to ensure that our patients, their carers and local hospice and palliative care services have a voice… and that policy makers listen to them.

Lack of awareness, understanding and commitment at the national and international policy level are some of the major barriers to hospice and palliative care. We need supportive national and international policies in place, access to medications for pain treatment and government commitment and passion to create change.  Patients, their families and carers need to be heard. We are working towards this through:

•        EMPOWERING OUR NATIONAL AND LOCAL MEMBERS

•        CREATING CAMPAIGNING OPPORTUNITIES

•        PROVIDING THE EVIDENCE, STORIES, FACTS AND FIGURES

2.       Programmes

We want quality palliative care provided in hospitals, communities and homes

Everyone, everywhere should have access to hospice and palliative care whenever and wherever  they need it. To achieve this, we are raising funds to work with local and national hospice and palliative care providers, governments, health care workers and people living with conditions to ensure countries have:-

•        SKILLED HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS

•        MEDICATIONS TO STOP PAIN

•        EFFECTIVE NATIONAL POLICIES

•        QUALITY HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE CARE SERVICES

We understand the importance of including the poorest and most marginalised in our programmes.

3.       World Hospice and Palliative Care Day

We organise this unified day of action to celebrate and support hospice and palliative care worldwide. Events take place in over 60 countries around the world every October. The day is an opportunity for people to make their voices heard.

4.       Information, news and views

WHPCA owns the international edition of ehospice. ehospice is a globally run news and information resource committed to bringing you the latest news, commentary and analysis from the world of hospice, palliative and end of life care.

Aimed at anyone with a professional or personal interest in palliative care, ehospice offers a single point of access to intelligence and good practice from around the world, with the aim of helping to improve patient care globally. It brings together the expertise and experience of the global hospice and palliative care community, and helps reduce the isolation felt by many people receiving or providing end of life care.
